A trip to the store can be a real chore. Jostling for parking spaces, screaming kids and grumpy shoppers can make the weekly shop a pain. This can be even worse if you are diabetic and struggling with low blood sugar levels. All too often we go shopping without a coherent plan in mind. We may have a list or some idea of the basics that we require but frequently we get carried away by our cravings. So here is some useful planning advice:
Decide in advance what you’re going to eat all week and list all the necessary ingredients. Make a different list containing all the non-edible items like cat food, toilet rolls and cleaning fluid. Avoid buying these at the supermarket where they can be more expensive and go instead to your local discount store. Avoid peak times if you need to concentrate. Try to shop when there are fewer crowds or take someone with you to help out.
Two major, long-term studies, the Nurses’ Health Study with 58,000 women participating and Health Professional’s Follow-up Study with 41,000 men participating from 1986 to 2012, were assessed by this study coauthor Zang Gong, PhD, and his colleagues for their homemade meal intake and development of Type 2 Diabetes.
At baseline no participants were diabetic or suffering from cancer or cardiovascular disease in the study’s advent.
Over my career as a dietitian many people have asked me about the type of foods they should be eating. This can be challenging to answer. People that have diabetes are used to following a strict diet. There is not always a wide variety of foods to choose from. There are new and improve meal planning tips for people with diabetes. There is no magic diet. There are different types of eating patterns to help people manage their diabetes while having more food options.
In October, we discovered that having just one glass of red wine each day with a meal could be beneficial to glucose levels in the blood, although more than one glass of wine could counteract that effect. The research has shown that consuming excess levels of red wine does not have the same benefits as having just one glass of wine per day with a meal and that excess levels of red wine could potentially have an adverse effect on glucose levels in the blood, rather than being beneficial.
According to one of the latest studies on kids and diabetes, the long-term effects of heart disease and diabetes can be reversed with some relatively small changes in a child’s diet. Based on the information that was gathered by researchers, kids who eliminated sugar from their diets for a period of just nine days showed significant changes in lowering their cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure levels. Therefore, based on these studies, researchers are now saying that processed sugar products are major culprits in hendering the battle to keep children and adults healthy.
